How to Get a Football Scholarship in India? Types, Selection Criteria, & Preparation Tips

Most of us believe sports scholarships are only for the most gifted players.

But the truth is, they’re for the most prepared players. Yes, a player might have the talent and the drive, but scholarships go to those who consistently perform and stand out in competitions.

In this blog, we’ll talk about the different types of football scholarships in India, what selectors value most when choosing a candidate, and how your child can start preparing now to give themselves the best chance of earning one.

The Different Types of Football Scholarships in India

A football scholarship is not a free trial or a discounted football coaching fee. A scholarship backs your child’s football career by removing the financial barriers to football training and academics, or both. But just like in football, where there’s more than one way to score a goal, there’s also more than one way to earn a football scholarship in India.

1.Government Sports Scholarship

There are many government programs that support athletes who perform well in both sports and academics. One example is the Khelo India program by the Sports Authority of India. In the year 2013-2014, they supported over 3000 athletes, including many footballers, with scholarships worth Rs 6.2 lakhs per athlete annually.

2.University-Level Sports Scholarship

Top universities, such as Delhi University and Punjab University, have sports scholarships for football players. If your child has a strong football portfolio and a good academic record, they can get admission to these highly competitive colleges. Once admitted, along with quality education, the scholarship may include benefits like full/partial fee waivers, coverage of living and travel expenses, and free sports gear. Plus, the opportunity to train with experienced coaches, compete in major tournaments, and network with other talented footballers.

3.Football Academy Scholarships

Some football academies provide more than just free training; for selected scholarship candidates, they provide:

  • Academic support for players
  • Customised nutrition plans
  • Dorm amenities
  • Injury prevention and management
  • National and international tournament exposure, and more.

Why? Because they want to prepare the players for a higher and tougher level of competition. One such example is our BFC Academy, where players get all the above facilities… plus they also get the opportunity to progress from the BFC Academy to the BFC Reserves, before aiming for the First Team that competes in the Indian Super League (ISL).

What do selectors look for in a scholarship candidate?

The first is football performance. Selectors and academies take note of how players perform during trial days and evaluate their overall game sense. However, they also look into the following three critical factors in a scholarship candidate.

1.Academic Consistency

Yes, academics matter. Scholarship programs want young players to balance their football training with studies. Even at our BFC Academy, we make sure players focus on both. The reason? It isn’t just because education provides a safety net, but because good education directly helps players on the pitch. It helps them improve their decision-making, problem-solving, and time-management skills.

2.Coach recommendations

A coach endorsement can be that little extra push to help you stand out. But to own it, a player needs more than just good football skills. Yes, because coaches look for qualities like attitude, leadership, willingness to learn, and willingness to get back on the pitch even after failures. Essentially, they look for qualities that show long-term potential in a player.

3.Strong Football Portfolio

A football portfolio tells the story of a player. It tells how far they have come and how dedicated they are to the game. Some must-haves include match videos, media mentions (if any), tournament certificates, awards or recognition from schools or events.

How Can You Start Preparing So You Get A Football Scholarship?

Scholarships don’t just go to the best player; they go to the best-prepared players. Here are three things to prepare if you want to get a football scholarship.

1.Train In A Recognised Academy

Where your child trains decides how far they go in football. That’s why choosing the right academy, one that’s AIFF-accredited or linked to a professional club, is important, as it provides regular exposure to scouts and trial opportunities. If we take BFC Soccer Schools as an example, we have a step-by-step player development pathway. Here, complete beginners start with a free trial session at the soccer schools level. As they train consistently and improve their football skills, they progress to the soccer school elite, which acts as a gateway to the BFC Academy – our fully funded scholarship program.

2. Start Building A Profile Early

We’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating. Sometimes, selectors spot a player performing exceptionally well on the pitch, only to find later that they have no portfolio or proof to show the journey. It’s not a lack of skill, but a lack of documentation. And this can cause talented players to go unnoticed and overlooked by selectors. Once again, start building your portfolio as early as possible.

3.Nutrition, Hydration & Rest

Did you know that athletes who sleep less than 8 hours per night are 1.7 times more likely to get injured compared to those who sleep more than 8 hours? So, even small improvements in sleep and diet can make a huge impact.

Recently, at our summer camp, sports nutritionist Khushi Jaiswal from the Inspire Institute of Sport shared how the right balance of nutrition, hydration, and rest helps young footballers perform and recover at their best.

Inside BFC Academy’s Fully Funded Scholarship Program

When parents ask us if there’s a football scholarship that covers everything, we point them to one place:

The BFC Academy

If your child is selected for the BFC Academy, they receive a fully funded scholarship. This scholarship includes coaching from AFC-licensed coaches, education at our partnered CBSE schools, and residential facilities at the Inspire Institute of Sport at the JSW Township in Vijayanagar, Bellary. Plus, the scholarship also covers personalised nutrition plans, holistic sports education, injury prevention strategies, sports psychology sessions, and tournament exposure like the AIFF Youth League and the Next Gen Cup.

How Does the Selection Process at BFC Academy Work?

Our scouting team identifies talented players through various tournaments nationwide and our youth development system, which is built around the BFC Player Development Pathway Pyramid. This pathway begins at the grassroots level with BFC Soccer Schools, nurturing young players from the ground up. Additionally, we hold BFC Academy trials in Bengaluru, where top prospects undergo multiple evaluation rounds. Once selected, players undergo a thorough medical assessment and participate in an orientation session with their parents before officially joining the BFC Academy.

The BFC Academy has earned the AIFF 5-star academy rating: the highest recognition given by the All India Football Federation to only the best football academies in India that consistently maintain the highest standards in coaching, training, and long-term player development.
