How to Support Your Child’s Recovery from Youth Football Injuries
We often hear this from parents, especially when their child is recovering from an injury:
“My child loves football, but now that they can’t train… how do we keep them motivated?”
It’s a valid question because youth football injuries – be it a sprained ankle, sore knee, or any other injury – doesn’t just affect a players’ body. It disrupts their daily routine, momentum, and sometimes (yes) even their confidence. And as a parent, it’s hard to see it happening. You want them to recover quickly, but also make sure they don’t lose their love for the game due to injury.
So, in this blog, with insights from BFC coaches, we’ll show how you can help your child stay motivated and mentally “in the game” while their body is healing.
-
Recover Right, Recover Faster, And Keep the Momentum Going
One of the biggest motivators during injury breaks is seeing improvements. Even small improvements like better balance or pain-free movement can boost a player’s confidence and keep them excited about returning to the pitch.
That’s why our coaches recommend starting light movement as soon as the physiotherapist clears the player. Here are some recovery suggestions for common youth football injuries we see at our football school during training seasons:
- Ankle Sprains & Hamstring Strains:
For Ankle sprains, start by standing on one leg to rebuild balance. Once that feels steady, challenge yourself in fun ways: Can you do it with one eye closed? Both eyes closed? While rotating a football around your body? Then, progress to sport-specific movements like jumping, landing, and finally adding dribbling, or shooting.
For Hamstring Strains, begin simply by touching your toes with a soft bend in the knees. Next, aim to touch them without bending the knees – either standing or seated on the floor. Once comfortable, progress to hamstring bridges with a band by pressing your heels into the floor and raise your hips off the ground (so you can strengthen your hamstring directly).
- Knee Pain:
Begin with easy wall sits (i.e. sitting on the wall without a chair). Next, try slow, slow step-ups, and once that feels okay, you can add light footwork in your but skip without jumping or sudden turns.
By the way, to help our young players at BFC Soccer Schools, we’ve recently teamed up with Rapid Sport Fitness – our official strength and conditioning partner. They work closely with our coaches to guide players through age-appropriate routines that support both recovery from youth football injuries and long-term injury prevention.

-
Build Mental Strength, Even Off the Pitch
Recovery often focuses on the physical: rest, rehab, and movement.
But if you ask our BFC coaches, they’ll tell you… downtime is the perfect window to train the mind. Here’s how players can stay mentally sharp while off the field:
- Journaling:
Just a few minutes a day to jot down football goals, like working on left-foot passing or improving positioning, to stay focused and moving forward even during recovery.
- Visualization:
Wayne Rooney said, “I lie in bed the night before the game and visualise myself scoring goals or doing well.” This worked because studies show that mental imagery activates the same neural pathways as physical practice. This means during recovery, young players can do the same. They can visualise receiving a pass or making a tackle to keep their football instincts sharp.
Remember: injury or not, football is also a mental game, so every habit built during the recovery time will lay a good foundation for a strong return.
-
Turning Screen Time into Game Time
Extra screen time during recovery is normal. Instead of cutting it, BFC Soccer Schools coaches suggest players use their screen time to learn more about football.
Here’s how:
- Analyse the Game Like a Coach:
When you’re watching a match with your child, ask them, “Where should the ball have gone?” or “What could the defender have done differently?” Questions like these help them think about the game tactically and build decision-making skills they can apply once they’re back on the pitch.
- Pick a Player to Study:
Let your child pick a player they admire, and ask them to watch how they move off the ball, create space, and so on. Just by observing a single player every day, they’ll realise what it takes to dominate the game, even without the ball.
And that’s the point: even when they’re off the field, their football brain doesn’t have to switch off… it just needs a new way to stay active.
Speaking of staying active:
At our football academy, we believe learning never stops, not just for players, but for coaches too. That’s why we run the Coaches’ Clinic, a programme that equips coaches across India with advanced football training and injury prevention strategies so our young players can train smarter and safer.
Even the Best Footballers Get Injured, It’s How You Come Back
Take Sunil Chhetri, for example. A legend admired by every young BFC player… in November 2018, during an ISL match, he suffered an ankle injury that ruled him out of India’s next few international matches for a couple of weeks. But Chhetri didn’t view that pause as time wasted. And guess what? When he returned to the pitch, he led Bengaluru FC to their first-ever ISL title in the 2018-19 season.
That’s the message we share with our young players recovering from injury:
You’re not stepping away from football, you’re stepping into a different kind of growth… one that builds the mind.
